Holy Ghost Orthodox Church was founded when hundreds of faithful, thoroughly committed to the Lord and sincerely devoted to the time-honored traditions of Eastern Christianity, liberated themselves from the yoke of Latinization and discovered the eternal truth of Holy Orthodoxy. Having lost their house of worship by the ruling of a civil court of law, the members of this new, self-converted Family in Christ established Holy Ghost Church on August 7, 1937. Their first Divine Liturgy was celebrated to God’s glory in the grassy field of Mont Clare, PA by their pastor, Fr. Alexander Kossey. The present properties of the 22-acre Phoenix Park were eventually purchased from the Reeves Family and construction for the Church building completed in 2005. Today, Holy Ghost Church continues to thrive. Its congregation of over 160 families is trans-national, attracting members from all branches of Orthodoxy and through conversion to the Holy Orthodox Faith. Divine Liturgy is celebrated every Sunday at 9:00 AM followed by coffee hour.

All services are in English.

Saint Philip’s of Souderton is a “Pan-Orthodox” parish begun in 1978. They moved from Horsham Township, PA to the beautiful sanctuary in Souderton, PA in 1991 and added an education wing including the fellowship hall “the Great Room” and Sunday School rooms, a library, and an office in 1998. The parish is comprised of over 125 families from many backgrounds. The diversity of backgrounds at Saint Philip’s attests to the appeal of Orthodoxy at a time when many religious groups are viewed as accommodating and trendy. Many converts have sought out Orthodoxy in recent years, discovering its fidelity to scriptural and doctrinal foundations and its changeless expression of the historic Christian faith.

St. Philip’s has a large variety of activities and services throughout the week. Matins (Orthros) is held every Sunday morning at 8:50 AM and by Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM, followed by Sunday school.

All services are in English.

Orthodox Church in America

St. Mark’s Church was founded on November 15, 1972 by a small group of people who had in mind a parish open to Orthodox believers of all national backgrounds. Initially, they began meeting in parishioners’ homes and at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Doylestown, PA. His Eminence, Archbishop Kiprian confirmed the name of the new mission as St. Mark’s Church (the Apostle and Evangelist) in 1974. For a time, services were celebrated in Old Historic Trinity Episcopal Church in Buckingham, PA, until the parish acquired its own property, some five acres of wooded land with a home in Wrightstown, PA, where the parish presently meets. The church was built and consecrated in 1988.

Divine Liturgy is held every Sunday morning at 9:30 AM and Vespers on Saturday evenings at 6:00 PM.

All services are in English.

Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America

St. George Church was founded in 1917 to minister to the Orthodox Christians living in Philadelphia who had emigrated from areas of the Middle East: primarily Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria. In their original home countries, these Christians lived under the pastoral care of the local clergy and bishops of the Patriarchate of the city Antioch, which is the city “…where the disciples were first called Christians.” (Acts 11:26)

In North America these newly arrived immigrants were at first ministered to by the Syrian mission under the Russian Orthodox Church, led by St. Raphael Hawaweeny, the first Orthodox bishop consecrated in North America. With the rise of communism in Russia the Patriarchate of Moscow was unable to sustain much of their work around the world, including the Syrian mission. Thus many of the Arab Orthodox Christians sought help from the Patriarch and Synod of Antioch. Over the years the community of St. George moved from the South Philadelphia area, where it was founded, west into the ‘suburban’ area of Upper Darby.

Today, the St. George community is made up people from a variety of backgrounds. Some are from traditional Orthodox countries and families. Others, are those who, in their earnest and heartfelt search for the loving and merciful God, have found the Church of the New Testament and the Apostles on their own. All together the parishioners of St. George are a rich witness to the depth of the Orthodox way of life and how it speaks to and teaches everyone who seek the “pearl of great price”, a life in Christ.

Orthros is held every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m., followed by Sunday School and Bible Study. Orthros is also held on Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m. and Saturday Vespers at 5:00 p.m.

Services are in English.

In 1906 the “Societatea Banatiana” was established by immigrants from the province of Banatin south-western Romania and served as a temporary location for the pioneer immigrants settling in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood to sing hymns and hold occasional services. On June 13, 1913, a Romanian-Orthodox parish was established and appropriately named Descent of the Holy Spirit Romanian Orthodox Church. Religious services continued to be held in the society’s hall until 1919. In 1923 the Episcopal Diocese gave the Romanian congregation free use of the entire church property. In 1929 the congregation received its first permanent priest, Father John Popovici (1890-1973). This pioneer Romanian priest honorably served his people for nearly forty years until he retired in 1968. In 1965, the majority of the church council and membership decided to relocate the parish to the nearby Philadelphia suburb of Elkins Park in Montgomery County. There the congregation purchased a modified Gothic style Presbyterian church with attached parish hall, grounds, and parish house. The church was remodeled for Orthodox church services and consecrated on September 26, 1965 by Archbishop Valerian Trifa.

The congregation currently has about 100 members. Many members belong to families consisting of second-to fourth-generation Romanian-Americans; but a majority of the congregation comprises more recent immigrants from all provinces of Romania. Romanian cultural events such as dances, dinners, musical and theatrical performances are held on a regular basis throughout the year. A Romanian-American cultural museum, organized and sponsored by the Societatea Banatiana, is open to the general public by appointment.

Church services are held every Sunday morning beginning at 9:30 A.M., and on Friday evenings at 7 P.M. in the summer and 6 P.M. in the winter.

Services are in Romanian and English.
